As I mentioned in an earlier post, my armies will be based on 50x50mm stands of 4-6 models each for infantry. I want to build a lot of character into the units and maybe one in four stands will be true vignettes...
My plan for command is to base three models on half hexes in the manner of the Napoleonic units Barry Hilton and Dave Imrie. This makes it easy to combine the rank and file stands in any combination and still ensure that the unit's colors will be in the center of the unit, no matter the formation.
I'll have shots of a couple of finished units next week!
Sorry guys, no more ammo, running away now...
ReplyDeleteExcellent job!
I like the idea about the half command base, very well painted by the way!
ReplyDeleteAre you having Litko make the half-hex bases, or are you cutting them yourself? I've half a mind to do something similar for my Thirty Years War officer figures.
ReplyDeleteI do like how the vignette/character idea plays out.
Lovely painting!

Thanks, guys!
ReplyDeleteRob, I cut the hexes in half myself... I figured I could probably make that much effort, though I bet the folks at Litko would make half hexes for you if you asked...
Excellent painting as always.
ReplyDeleteHmmm, I may have to rethink my basing with your half-command base idea. At this stage I was just planning to manually center the command when I first base the unit, but then you can't expand it later.
ReplyDeleteNice Clarence. I've also been thinking of following David and Barry's lead for command stands. Is there any particular reason you've opted for half-hexes instead of semi-circles?
ReplyDeleteThe half-hexes are what Barry and David are using now (I know Barry did some half circles earlier). Hexes are probably easier to cut in half and get two equal pieces...
ReplyDeleteCircles would work just as well...
Are you varnishing the cut edge, or leaving it plain?
ReplyDeleteInteresting question, Rob. I don't always paint the edges of the Litko bases, as their natural color is very similar to my paints, but the cut edge is lighter so I probably will. It may not be important since the cut edge will always be placed against the unit.
ReplyDeleteI'm asking because I don't paint the edges of my Litko bases - I like that varnished look. So I was hoping you'd found a way to match it.
ReplyDeleteGreat idea - great vignettes. Can't help but noticing one of 'em running away. Damned militia - what are you afraid of - they're only British regulars! 8-0
ReplyDeleteCheers,
Doc
Great minis as always.
