Answering the Call

Recruits continue to swell the ranks to see off the forces of King George. These models are not arranged in any specific way at the moment, merely stacked up in a neat line for the group photo. My plan is to base like poses together - i.e all marching, advancing, firing/loading, etc. My order from Litko (100 50x50mm bases) was posted yesterday so the next photos will be based properly.

The more I read on the period, the more my plans evolve. Right now I am planning on five units of four stands each - 3 units of South Carolina Militia (The models above are representative of the typical appearance of these units), 1 unit of North Carolina/Georgia Militia (a 50/50 mix of earth-toned hunting shirts and models above), and 1 unit of Virginia Militia (mostly in green-dyed hunting shirts). Again, depending on the scenario, these may be mixed in any combination of 2-6 stands, but in general it helps me to have a plan for the collection...

  1. They look good! I'm looking forward to seeing them all based up and ready for war.

  4. Not sure if you mentioned this but, what rules do you plan to use for the AWI project?

  5. Actually, Ron, I'm not sure on the rules. I have British Grenadier, Black Powder, and Piquet. I think Republic to Empire would work with modifications. I also have half a dozen free sets from various magazines and websites. Finally, I'm not above writing my own if one of these doesn't fit my impression of the period!

  7. I have all the sets you mentioned Clarence, but one I don't have is currently being rewritten by Eric Burgess. The title is "Guns of Liberty". It is quite cheap by recent standards, and will be available directly from the author when he's finished the new edition. Might be worth a look.

  9. Clarence, how different are BLB from RTE?

I ask because you may wish to avoid the more anachronistic period elements of Napoleonics.

  10. I don't think BLB is suited to the AWI. R2E would need amendments to make them more compatible to the period, but are definitely closer than BLB.

Actually I am now leaning toward an unpublished set of rules by Bryan Ansell called simply 'Horse & Musket' (I have a play test copy) which were designed primarily for the SYW/AWI. It uses card driven mechanics of which I am a fan.
