I'm undecided on the cavalry, but they will either both be heavy (Scots Greys and Inniskilling Dragoons) or light (Light Dragoons, Lancers, or Hussars). Great War Miniatures doesn't currently offer British Lancers or Hussars and I might need to get creative, plucking these from other theaters (the Carlist War BAL and British Intervention Force 1860) covered by Perry Miniatures. There might be a few inaccuracies, but I'm not terribly bothered by that for this collection. I am aware Wargames Foundry makes these, but they are tiny compared to the GWM range.</div><div><br /></div><div>I really to want to add "brigades" (two units, possibly supported by a gun or detachment of light infantry) of guards, highlanders, French, and Ottomans. Of course I'll need to double the size of my Russian army as well, adding naval troopers, light cavalry, and more Cossacks! That's how these things go when megalomania sets in!</div><div><br /></div><div>With these armies complete, I'll have enough to play a small game of <b><i>A Gentleman's War</i></b> or Neil Thomas's <b><i>Wargaming Nineteenth Century Europe</i></b>. I'll probably end up making my own - it occurs to me that <b><i>Donnybrook</i></b> would work with a little tinkering since the units are so small. I'm not planning on refighting any of the historical conflicts of the period and may explore alternate history narratives such as "what if the Austrian Empire had joined Russia?" to broaden the theater (and the collection).</div><p></p><p>More soon!</p>quindiahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14194306105013871853noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2937554593589042647.post-8348910671325046882024-01-17T12:27:00.004-05:002024-01-17T12:33:49.315-05:00The Russian (Tiny) Horde<p>I've been steadily painting, but for some reason blogging is a chore right now and I can't seem to be bothered to post on a regular basis. The blog has become more of a personal hobby diary for me rather than "Look at what I'm doing!" Regardless, my starting Russian army for the Crimean War and <b><i>A Gentleman's War</i></b> is finished! It's remarkably satisfying to reach a set goal.</p><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg0DLiN0CnCUkObg-kd5urjUzAi3S9MAwSXcGYv0AApsdpWD8lJ-A5KWf4BHsIpi9KzbpbtAQryRXs95jcq3XQjTA2q0SAdeMLRqUa4bczTf6PIrpjQ472CMtep4Yjo_sIww51RaxIU5MNoKeh_XmjybOfiNhL3HwiEdr4VdlfpUCfwZQcf_eCIU3kJOYo/s3732/Crimean%20War%20-%20Russian%20Army%20-%20Quindia%20Studios.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2596" data-original-width="3732" height="446" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg0DLiN0CnCUkObg-kd5urjUzAi3S9MAwSXcGYv0AApsdpWD8lJ-A5KWf4BHsIpi9KzbpbtAQryRXs95jcq3XQjTA2q0SAdeMLRqUa4bczTf6PIrpjQ472CMtep4Yjo_sIww51RaxIU5MNoKeh_XmjybOfiNhL3HwiEdr4VdlfpUCfwZQcf_eCIU3kJOYo/w640-h446/Crimean%20War%20-%20Russian%20Army%20-%20Quindia%20Studios.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><div><br /></div>My initial goal was three units of 12 infantry, but I've decided I want the Russian units to be 16 models strong and have a couple more packs on the way (alternately, I will be able to field four units of 12).<div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEimvqvdtME4E7hD_lVOHNPbjqUnm5xm4l99eWk1E3mFKE3vn1XShRlg0ob7dR6Oi6xYG6A79D9lrSBRpyNdmQgCDyrU99w0XkVJcMkNspZOjs29CS9Uwq32GpH1mpQh2td624JuAySdvI_Hr_XQ8OvVWds8Qv3BhWywnzV3vZ0rMna6TyizFquPWNrzGU4/s3948/Crimean%20War%20-%20Russian%20Infantry%20-%20Quindia%20Studios.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2596" data-original-width="3948" height="420" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEimvqvdtME4E7hD_lVOHNPbjqUnm5xm4l99eWk1E3mFKE3vn1XShRlg0ob7dR6Oi6xYG6A79D9lrSBRpyNdmQgCDyrU99w0XkVJcMkNspZOjs29CS9Uwq32GpH1mpQh2td624JuAySdvI_Hr_XQ8OvVWds8Qv3BhWywnzV3vZ0rMna6TyizFquPWNrzGU4/w640-h420/Crimean%20War%20-%20Russian%20Infantry%20-%20Quindia%20Studios.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><div><p>Artillery is one of the strengths of the Russian army, so I decided to field two guns for this tiny army. V. Viskovatov</a>, the flags of the Don Cossacks were the same as the line cavalry. They bore the inscription "For the Deeds of the Don Host to pacify Hungary and Transylvania 1849." Several regiments may have had other slogans, but I'm keeping my flags as generic as possible.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi4UZDnxPg67FVeHuG-dl4kPPN0Ec9-J5yGJxeW7hjHrUf9vuR03AldTXxBbaxlLMsBDCw5g75SNMmNgJ-Ks6TB11I94A1RBOTcJJova5hfzQf7Vfz0ghsxVTyjIxcV0wWf_okXKWKOQ52vG_pcFs8zriNavYVmLV0knN6Ag-oQqmwxbdrOhoquTay0jv8/s3540/Crimean%20War%20-%20Russian%20Don%20Cossacks%20-%20Quindia%20Studios.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2488" data-original-width="3540" height="450" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi4UZDnxPg67FVeHuG-dl4kPPN0Ec9-J5yGJxeW7hjHrUf9vuR03AldTXxBbaxlLMsBDCw5g75SNMmNgJ-Ks6TB11I94A1RBOTcJJova5hfzQf7Vfz0ghsxVTyjIxcV0wWf_okXKWKOQ52vG_pcFs8zriNavYVmLV0knN6Ag-oQqmwxbdrOhoquTay0jv8/w640-h450/Crimean%20War%20-%20Russian%20Don%20Cossacks%20-%20Quindia%20Studios.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><p>This has been a fun project so far. Although the blog often gets neglected, I've normally continued hobbying "off camera", contenting myself with quick Facebook posts on various groups. For some reason, I've painted almost nothing this year apart from a handful of models to finish my <b><i>King of Buccaneers</i></b> 4Play PDF (see the last post) waaaaaay back in January.</div><p></p><p><i>Something</i> needed to change. I bought a whole new set of paints (<a href="https://www.duncanrhodes.com/ttc-paints/" target="_blank">Two Thin Coats</a> from Duncan Rhodes). My amazing wife suggested we turn the spare bedroom into a dedicated studio (more on that in a future post... I'm still arranging things) so I have a whole new room for my hobby. I have a pile of projects that could use attention (a handful of units to finish my Boyne collection, British for the AWI, my SYW Imagi-nations, the Sudan... sigh), but somehow I couldn't get motivated to tackle them. What I needed was something to jumpstart the painting routine that used to be part of my weekly life.</p><p>I turned to the piles of books that are scattered through nearly ever room in my house for inspiration. There HAD to be something around here to give me a kick!</p><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi3B1yRoYJOtL5upSoH7-qvGl5Zvb5Vkjcqq9DuC3iDujIaFDKMAvRgyQ0DGQjVlarcKXEMvC2kN7c_XR8AMCyx5nAvqW1KeRhkUX8vo4WlxOs_c0Qw67gQLQhmI-iCHVI8TDmsUpXH8EVDOJqkGv4zWKOpbqPDixWrcaRLnyTa2_7p_6lxAhg0z1OE8sg/s1000/A%20Gentleman's%20War%20by%20Howard%20Whitehouse.jpg" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1000" data-original-width="800" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi3B1yRoYJOtL5upSoH7-qvGl5Zvb5Vkjcqq9DuC3iDujIaFDKMAvRgyQ0DGQjVlarcKXEMvC2kN7c_XR8AMCyx5nAvqW1KeRhkUX8vo4WlxOs_c0Qw67gQLQhmI-iCHVI8TDmsUpXH8EVDOJqkGv4zWKOpbqPDixWrcaRLnyTa2_7p_6lxAhg0z1OE8sg/w256-h320/A%20Gentleman's%20War%20by%20Howard%20Whitehouse.jpg" width="256" /></a></div><b><i><a href="https://www.amazon.com/Gentlemans-War-Glossy-Coats-Bayonets/dp/1945430974/ref=tmm_hrd_swatch_0?_encoding=UTF8&qid=1699722770&sr=8-1" target="_blank">A Gentleman's War</a></i></b>. Howard Whitehouse... I love the book he wrote on the Colonial era (<b><i>Battle in Africa 1879-1914</i></b>). Did I ever read <b><i>A Gentleman's War</i></b>? When did I even buy it? Skipping ahead a bit, this was it! The rules are fairly conventional and owe quite a bit to Charles Grant and Donald Featherstone with the addition of a turn mechanic inspired by Larry Brom's <b><i>The Sword and the Flame </i></b>(all freely admitted by the author). If you've read my blog in the past, you know I'm a fan of all of these. The book is a delightful read and provided the spark I was looking for.<p></p><p>The core rules are presented for the H.G. Wells era in the decades before World War I, but will work for any Horse & Musket period (and there are chapters dedicated to earlier periods). I have models for several different conflicts in this broad category and if it were just a question of playing games with the rules I could have gotten stuck in right away. Tilting at these windmills began as a quest to get me painting and for that I needed something new. Having just read <i><b>Flashman at the Charge</b></i> (again), the choice was an easy one. I toddled off the scour the web for 28mm scale models for the Crimean War!</p><p>There seem to be several good choices, but I'll skip the process I went through and just say I settled on <a href="https://www.northstarfigures.com/list.php?man=20&cat=175&page=1" target="_blank">Great War Miniatures</a>. I always enjoy painting sculpts by Dave Andrews and Aly Morrison. I am planning out to start with VERY small armies... three or four units of infantry, two or three units of cavalry, and a couple of guns per side. I'm not basing the collection on any particular battle or brigade and will start with Russians and British. They will probably end up fighting over some fictional corner of the Ukraine far removed from the famous historical battlefields.</p><p>To ease back in, I picked the Russians first as the great coats would make for easy brushwork. My initial goal (and initial purchase) was:</p><p></p><ul style="text-align: left;"><li>Two Units of Line Infantry (12 models each)</li><li>One Unit of Grenadiers (12 models)</li><li>Two Units of Dragoons (6 models each)</li><li>One Unit of Cossacks (6 models)</li><li>Two Guns (1 gun plus 3 crew each)</li></ul><p></p><p>I'm not a huge fan of the appearance of 12-model infantry units on the table, but another goal of this project is to realize completion. <b><i>A Gentleman's War</i></b> allows for larger units and if I manage to finish both sides, I'll explore expanding the infantry to 18 models. I am basing figures individually so I'll be able to reorganize things easily. I will also be able to use the collection with <b><i>Donnybrook</i></b>!</p><p>So here are my first two units...</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhRsUo0TlhZjQBn38YzB3ltnVbrN-4TbCiayC-ohFe6GpbFOG6QrfB1qXE-yjbKn5Gx2VLETSWysaM0DHSS98cH-yoIK612Ic85MDd7L4doKV37odWmGSkJQtHUuK_R6vhs9mwicB8wThd9FzET0D7uw-AwsFw8JjCRC3o_Eyf10MsVL2BmSQ878ZKd4XA/s2994/Crimean%20War%20-%20Russians%20-%20Quindia%20Studios.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1908" data-original-width="2994" height="408" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhRsUo0TlhZjQBn38YzB3ltnVbrN-4TbCiayC-ohFe6GpbFOG6QrfB1qXE-yjbKn5Gx2VLETSWysaM0DHSS98cH-yoIK612Ic85MDd7L4doKV37odWmGSkJQtHUuK_R6vhs9mwicB8wThd9FzET0D7uw-AwsFw8JjCRC3o_Eyf10MsVL2BmSQ878ZKd4XA/w640-h408/Crimean%20War%20-%20Russians%20-%20Quindia%20Studios.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><p>In my head canon, these are "companies" because I just can't think of 12-model battalions, but they will be grouped into "brigades" for game purposes. I intend to paint separate command figures who will be scattered through the brigade, creating an appearance similar to my <a href="https://quindiastudios.blogspot.com/2022/02/von-tripdenfel-musketeer-regiment.html" target="_blank">SYW units</a>. </p><p>I DID enjoy painting these and have the next models on the desk. I'll take some proper photos on terrain once I get a few more units ready. More (fingers crossed) soon!</p>quindiahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14194306105013871853noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2937554593589042647.post-22799307584477389362023-03-20T13:40:00.010-04:002023-11-02T14:46:44.563-04:00King of Buccaneers<p><i></i></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><i><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhNgpjCMNdrAHDHC0jy8tCK5YbPdA4TmjIDP46RR2q5HdZwurjkXpH1YcWFe_4PrVcfLPhkQ3qYd_BZB-SfKT019f481aL43vnY9GsstyaDYm0BWvdwpSoeiGe324INGzJm5fh0LCQW3_WEUcI6AHzCL6h93ryKBZgEWl5E_5FU2t_Fi_E2xB6rbnWH/s3300/Q001%20Panama%201671.jpg" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="3300" data-original-width="2550" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhNgpjCMNdrAHDHC0jy8tCK5YbPdA4TmjIDP46RR2q5HdZwurjkXpH1YcWFe_4PrVcfLPhkQ3qYd_BZB-SfKT019f481aL43vnY9GsstyaDYm0BWvdwpSoeiGe324INGzJm5fh0LCQW3_WEUcI6AHzCL6h93ryKBZgEWl5E_5FU2t_Fi_E2xB6rbnWH/s320/Q001%20Panama%201671.jpg" width="247" /></a></i></div><i><br /></i>So this was an epic undertaking. When Barry first unveiled the 4Play scenario pack concept, he invited me to join in. While I had a pile of ideas, I quickly realized I didn't have the models to present them in the manner I wished. We were eyeball deep in <b><i>Mad for War</i></b> at the time. As naval gaming had never been a passion of mine, I set out to read some books on the subject to see what all the fuss was about.<p></p><p>Being a proud gentleman of Virginia, I decided to focus on events on this side of the Pond. There were small actions all up and down the coast of colonies, but what drew more of my attention were exploits of the pirates, buccaneers, and privateers. Scattered all through the exploits of these sea dogs were small unit land actions that are perfect for <b><i>Beneath the Lily Banners</i></b> and <b><i>Donnybrook</i></b>! While they weren't painted, I had a pile of lead I'd amassed for pursuing our period into the Caribbean (after Barry's <a href="http://leagueofaugsburg.blogspot.com/2017/07/battle-for-britain-inside-caribbean.html" target="_blank">great game</a> I'd attended in the Old Country).</p><p><br /></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjedX9qXJ9SjwPlAKInkwnjnzMCiNrosXYR02SusJPTQqtBm9E1ylKNiCd1nTcLzkitFf1GrYp6yVhpyTcSPjBE7NMBzr-LeGu98MSsD22LPJwLXVf35_WXovATrW12oAZLNTDS7YJXi82kJH5Pzp3lfSirA8taeL5dY-LSMrw7DwHAqCXATAOHYAOR/s2048/IMG_6971.JPEG" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1536" data-original-width="2048" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjedX9qXJ9SjwPlAKInkwnjnzMCiNrosXYR02SusJPTQqtBm9E1ylKNiCd1nTcLzkitFf1GrYp6yVhpyTcSPjBE7NMBzr-LeGu98MSsD22LPJwLXVf35_WXovATrW12oAZLNTDS7YJXi82kJH5Pzp3lfSirA8taeL5dY-LSMrw7DwHAqCXATAOHYAOR/w640-h480/IMG_6971.JPEG" width="640" /></a></div><p>The Battle of Panama featured an army of buccaneer infantry against a mixed force of Spanish uniformed troops, native auxiliaries, poor artillery (some sources say any guns were left to defend the city), two large units of cavalry (extremely rare in this theater), and herd of oxen! The book has been sold out for a while. We intend to release a second edition with the detail and full color treatment for which we are known (no date... it's in the queue... lol), there's a project I've been wanting to do for a while.<p></p><p>My introduction to wargaming was with the black and white booklets, wrapped with cardstock covers and saddle stitched bindings of the 70s and 80s. I love the slick production and beautiful photographs found in modern publications, but I still drag out these old books from time to time—<i>WRG's Wargames Rules 3000BC to 1485AD</i>, <i>De Bellis Antiquitatis</i>, the original <i>Dungeons & Dragons</i>, and many offerings from Partizan Press (including David O'Brien's <i>Skirmish Battles of the American War of Independence</i>). </p><p>The old school renaissance in gaming isn't new. There is something very charming about these old books and it's long been an ambition of mine to do something similar. <a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhLe_56VHqLJG7eCzGaiCG-JK5Nv7xQpIQzxURbjHdEb7kfdudQZpfxkCioojZFba61_9ueF14M1ztQyITRH-4vgZvIUL4R1Vf3jZxGtEp3CIgUFUrcnnJja1uvo52xj-fF9JifdMrh5kHKLZ4G4B6cmCGQinfWwbdX66J48qNZHY4SEiJh8cRe2cWM/s1645/Old%20School%20Booklets.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: center;"><img border="0" data-original-height="922" data-original-width="1645" height="358" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhLe_56VHqLJG7eCzGaiCG-JK5Nv7xQpIQzxURbjHdEb7kfdudQZpfxkCioojZFba61_9ueF14M1ztQyITRH-4vgZvIUL4R1Vf3jZxGtEp3CIgUFUrcnnJja1uvo52xj-fF9JifdMrh5kHKLZ4G4B6cmCGQinfWwbdX66J48qNZHY4SEiJh8cRe2cWM/w640-h358/Old%20School%20Booklets.jpg" width="640" /></a></p>The day before Christmas, I sat down at my computer to try and get an idea of what an old school version of <b><i>Donnybrook</i></b> might look like. After laying out a few chapters, my OCD took over and I was hooked. Over the course of the next few weeks I spent many hours forcing the manuscript into the half-sized pages and madly scribbling new drawings (or reimagining old) with which to crown the tiny volume. Finally, I had a couple of copies produced by a local office supply store. <div><br /><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi800_033p9zDK-9Eh0L5Qefqtn6SVQAJef3TDPDcMFxIGYgSqh-u8smMoh2YlpwQylTPCa3JNQneFHaiqjlcivV2opOEM56ZItV5-yW0PGsFudVjp5joB9v6tk9cygNJvNIbzd8XMHAK6VBzgZ-P0J9jlmRr7Fj7dwwfW7E8dQIikjvEBEwWfJGsWV/s2048/IMG_6891.JPEG" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2048" data-original-width="1536" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi800_033p9zDK-9Eh0L5Qefqtn6SVQAJef3TDPDcMFxIGYgSqh-u8smMoh2YlpwQylTPCa3JNQneFHaiqjlcivV2opOEM56ZItV5-yW0PGsFudVjp5joB9v6tk9cygNJvNIbzd8XMHAK6VBzgZ-P0J9jlmRr7Fj7dwwfW7E8dQIikjvEBEwWfJGsWV/s320/IMG_6891.JPEG" width="240" /></a>

Troop ability types have been changed to match <b><i>Beneath the Lily Banners</i></b>, with Recruits becoming Raw and Elite, Veteran. If you already have a copy of <b><i>Donnybrook</i></b>, you don't NEED this book, but you may find it handier to use at the game table.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">The largest change (and biggest omission) is the lack of faction lists. I've long intended to change how these were presented. They have always been meant as guidelines for new gamers, but were never meant to be set in stone. Barry and I break them on a regular basis to fit the stories we tell. Factions WILL return in the second edition, but didn't seem necessary for <b><i>Donnybrook Essentials</i></b>.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh2BmCnviMJG1SojTqc6FW_kgKoMGF4w5obKb6Jk-eJmUmOLgFXUWq96tVp9V-noa6mD7DXguu2FN2zPBd9eH6XCNRf905en07wRwW3fk5lBP42m3Z27-_22rUn4N4t29wo-qeTaj23nPBD2qI1FyYfFeq4vNfeF4UpjNTuuOotAZYz0PTWv-Ua6Ugg/s1938/Donnybrook%20Essentials%20Illos%2002.png" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="935" data-original-width="1938" height="308" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh2BmCnviMJG1SojTqc6FW_kgKoMGF4w5obKb6Jk-eJmUmOLgFXUWq96tVp9V-noa6mD7DXguu2FN2zPBd9eH6XCNRf905en07wRwW3fk5lBP42m3Z27-_22rUn4N4t29wo-qeTaj23nPBD2qI1FyYfFeq4vNfeF4UpjNTuuOotAZYz0PTWv-Ua6Ugg/w640-h308/Donnybrook%20Essentials%20Illos%2002.png" width="640" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">To ensure you still have plenty of variety when building your forces, Special Characters have been expanded. They've actually been painted for a while now, but I just got around to painting the colonel and basing this horde.<p></p><p>This is the Grimjawsopol Musketeer Regiment of the Gran Duchy of Sazir, named for the province in which they are recruited. Colonel Yakov Romanov was appointed to lead these stout lads by Count Aleksandrov. The good colonel accepted the appointment with some trepidation as the Count of Grimjawsopol is known by the peasantry as "Alek the Mad" and the lord has been known to meet out gruesome fates to those who disappoint him. </p><p>The regiment is again shown in summer campaign dress. Most of the officers are in full uniform and reflect that worn by the rank and file during other times—dark green coat with black facings.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj5HmA99_DJeER8vUTmEoh4tWqUh5g_m7gs78Bj24oKMR6tfmceNC0lyvWqheqJKfT_4GJRvdUbwKNcj8VQjSTLfhfOzeSeNQ6bUeJH7cZNwLGuNjTzKF6CgtNLsjz12aW6xuiWWsbKCvambDPUtsqlNOA4xzG0wI3fYeJCXeZEZ-eZ0NZ6C2YBjdK1/s1344/The%20War%20Game%20-%20Grimjawsopol%2001.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="960" data-original-width="1344" height="458" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj5HmA99_DJeER8vUTmEoh4tWqUh5g_m7gs78Bj24oKMR6tfmceNC0lyvWqheqJKfT_4GJRvdUbwKNcj8VQjSTLfhfOzeSeNQ6bUeJH7cZNwLGuNjTzKF6CgtNLsjz12aW6xuiWWsbKCvambDPUtsqlNOA4xzG0wI3fYeJCXeZEZ-eZ0NZ6C2YBjdK1/w640-h458/The%20War%20Game%20-%20Grimjawsopol%2001.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><div><br /></div>The unit is often brigaded with the von Tripdenfel Musketeer Regiment as they also come from the Grimjawsopol province in Sazir (raised privately by Lord Gregor von Tripdenfel).<div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgVtfFCLpV8Px_dT1KDZuST3yB7ggqllva_IJ5BjZ1oyj_CPkp9K58QK7qd6DysK3hLgKSDajQWWkkyZh9mQPqSEOH8Syv-PAZf8LaTyBWNHRYxWrpZGSlp7nFJ4UKMXTikEu5JeH9l97A33EafMcX_LRg5qWYqenUeJvqAXIoRLQo19qNiShmXuZ_1/s1344/The%20War%20Game%20-%20Grimjawsopol%2002.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="960" data-original-width="1344" height="458" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgVtfFCLpV8Px_dT1KDZuST3yB7ggqllva_IJ5BjZ1oyj_CPkp9K58QK7qd6DysK3hLgKSDajQWWkkyZh9mQPqSEOH8Syv-PAZf8LaTyBWNHRYxWrpZGSlp7nFJ4UKMXTikEu5JeH9l97A33EafMcX_LRg5qWYqenUeJvqAXIoRLQo19qNiShmXuZ_1/w640-h458/The%20War%20Game%20-%20Grimjawsopol%2002.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><div><br /></div>I'm still toying with rules, but I have a long way to go before I can actually put armies on the table!</div><div><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiQU5KZCH7VyeYDYyDjr_zqJ92tnPzN12Inbn948sPHoNgSEjB8zS5GvFPcXBv0zdTpYfLJdSBCT780ApvALGWFo1WAhrMXa3n90eJ5b5F-TgvyAmRZs5EgVcBNygFcXOQeiRCCDOeLg_gGbHM5F3e5kxu9-HXnZ0B3Wt2ZpLUTGN5Na0RwrfHVghu-/s1344/The%20War%20Game%20-%20Regiments%20of%20Sazir%2001.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="960" data-original-width="1344" height="458" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiQU5KZCH7VyeYDYyDjr_zqJ92tnPzN12Inbn948sPHoNgSEjB8zS5GvFPcXBv0zdTpYfLJdSBCT780ApvALGWFo1WAhrMXa3n90eJ5b5F-TgvyAmRZs5EgVcBNygFcXOQeiRCCDOeLg_gGbHM5F3e5kxu9-HXnZ0B3Wt2ZpLUTGN5Na0RwrfHVghu-/w640-h458/The%20War%20Game%20-%20Regiments%20of%20Sazir%2001.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><div><br /></div>Up next on the painting table are an (as yet) unnamed company of Pandour Light Infantry, represented by 16 models and two characters (an officer and drummer). The painting style of chosen for this project is fast and fits well with the style of the game. Last year was dismal for me maintaining the blog, but I had a wedding to help plan, so I had other things on my plate. I wasn't idle on the modeling and painting front - I just didn't have the time to post about things very often. So... Throwback Thursday. As I can, I'll blog about stuff I did last year (mixed in with the new stuff).</p><p>First up is a Nile paddle steamer I built for my growing Sudan collection!</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEgh7JGFcdsIUaWRB0mP4WBasyt2eHTScNUeRySTG_ShFkkJNTZbU-DlgVrRrlthB_9pTotI9UH2fo7qwrx2v2R-Jh9OYrHJwhrBVNRH3wVLYNXo1uYJ_KYH6aNZ_dqkdEyKAQgpr7-sgwAPwUsq8l402zVxPf8gmvaUHcCBkc0xJmH_4coN6VT3GNa1=s2048" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1536" data-original-width="2048" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEgh7JGFcdsIUaWRB0mP4WBasyt2eHTScNUeRySTG_ShFkkJNTZbU-DlgVrRrlthB_9pTotI9UH2fo7qwrx2v2R-Jh9OYrHJwhrBVNRH3wVLYNXo1uYJ_KYH6aNZ_dqkdEyKAQgpr7-sgwAPwUsq8l402zVxPf8gmvaUHcCBkc0xJmH_4coN6VT3GNa1=w640-h480" width="640" /></a></div><p>This ship was constructed with parts from the Southern Belle kit from Lindberg, but I had to modify things pretty extensively because it's too small for 28mm. My new favorite game. I'm still working on my oldschool imagi-nations project (2nd regiment is two-thirds finished!), but I took a little side trip last week after discovering this wonderful world...<p></p><p><i>Churned mud and swampland stretches out into the gloom. Thick fog hangs heavy in the air. Rolling barrows loom out of the murk. A strange root writhes underfoot. A thousand years after the defeat of Napoleon at the Battle of Austerlitz, the world has fallen into decay. Endless war has led to technology stagnating, and beautiful countrysides have been ground to a thick ruin under the boots of a million dead men.</i></p><p><i>Now, nothing grows. A bizarre and horrible root covers the land; strangling the life from the trees, poisoning the water, and filling the sky with an acrid mist. Humanity barely endures by harvesting this disgusting tuber. It twists their bodies and minds. It infests their thoughts with divine visions of lost vegetables.</i></p><p><i>Bizarre religious orders have formed. They stockpile abandoned weapons unearthed by the twisting roots. Marching in column under fluttering banners, brandishing mud-clogged muskets and rusted bayonets, they are cruel parodies of long-forgotten armies on the march.</i></p><p><i>Gather your troops. Fix bayonets. Devote yourself to the roots.</i></p><p>Turnip 28 is based on the art of Max FitzGerlad (<a href="https://www.patreon.com/Turnip28" target="_blank">Patreon</a>). The rules for the game were designed by Gaetano Ferrara (from <a href="https://onepagerules.com/" target="_blank">Onepagerules</a>) and are still a work in progress—a living rulebook—though already very playable. There are very few "official" miniatures (yet), and the concept is that you build your own units by combining various plastic historical kits from Perry Miniatures, Warlord, Victrix, Wargames Atlantic, etc.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEjGMOFYiY4BfkV7FLvyb1u2z8Oa5h6250-q1PEgJ9OrDyjFjbPhfUCxMdzQoAsrLBac7efk5edzu8dwzHLS2d9-ruPKBrnQasq01P6wNaAUg66FnRw__P8rqdWSmU6sjlTijwVptBA0ns1iujfvCEHHOcNyF7tZ0fDo8WkflH0fwMvSHMWecrUoFqKq=s4096" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="4096" data-original-width="3277" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEjGMOFYiY4BfkV7FLvyb1u2z8Oa5h6250-q1PEgJ9OrDyjFjbPhfUCxMdzQoAsrLBac7efk5edzu8dwzHLS2d9-ruPKBrnQasq01P6wNaAUg66FnRw__P8rqdWSmU6sjlTijwVptBA0ns1iujfvCEHHOcNyF7tZ0fDo8WkflH0fwMvSHMWecrUoFqKq=w512-h640" width="512" /></a></div>It was this aspect of the game (and the great artwork) that inspired me to have a go at creating an army. In Turnip 28, your force is called a "regiment" and consists of a number of noblemen known as Snobs. The basic game consists of one Toff (your general) and two Toadies (lieutenants), but you can play with a different number if you like, as long as both sides field the same strength force. Each Snob has one unit (the Toff gets two, 'cause he's the Toff) so for a basic game, you have four units chosen from several different types of infantry, cavalry, and artillery. You can also pick a Cult, which gives you access to unique units and special abilities, but this adds complexity (and maybe some balance issues). Your regiment can actually change Cult allegiance between games, so you're not stuck with only one theme!<div><br /></div><div>This isn't meant to be a review (other than I LOVE it) so I'm not going into more detail than that (the <a href="https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1Yev8X1RFqTuZHIrRXLBevsHzU46pCmD-">book is free</a> - download it and have a look). Green or red coats are the standard for infantry regiments of Sazir. These are based heavily on Seven Year War Russians, but may mix troops types from other nations. I knew I wanted to use models primarily from Wargames Foundry. To ease myself into the task of painting massive units, I decided to start with models in waistcoats. Not only are these fantastic sculpts, there is less fiddly work painting the coats. I'm calling this fashion the "Summer" uniform. As the army grows, I'll add some properly attired infantry, but I felt like this would be a good start!<p></p><p>It was exciting to finish the first unit in this collection—Von Tripdenfel's Musketeer Regiment!</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEj3PJEEoKzIcB56q84zU9Xl6OErsCvdpXWR9jyeq_bIuurgqH2STwNdOI5ckT7V5itDtKFlTjkA3Hk1ZZGgRRiQDswQ_BT4-u5Qha37O7cQ97udrclOsX8XsAZfipOkjJSB0dssfeJQUCgNM1HAX96JJ5u-BNYXeVDXEhl5lJ0-nnAGutKqF9EYXaZL=s1344" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="784" data-original-width="1344" height="374" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEj3PJEEoKzIcB56q84zU9Xl6OErsCvdpXWR9jyeq_bIuurgqH2STwNdOI5ckT7V5itDtKFlTjkA3Hk1ZZGgRRiQDswQ_BT4-u5Qha37O7cQ97udrclOsX8XsAZfipOkjJSB0dssfeJQUCgNM1HAX96JJ5u-BNYXeVDXEhl5lJ0-nnAGutKqF9EYXaZL=w640-h374" width="640" /></a></div><div><br /></div>The organization isn't yet set in stone, but tentatively 48 models, three officers, an ensign, drummer, and mounted colonel make up a regiment. This is divided into three "companies" of 16 (including an NCO). As this is primarily a solo endeavor I'm planning to write my own rules. I haven't decided if a "standard" unit is 48 models or if it's actually 16 and the larger formation will act as a "brigade" (all units must stay with a structured formation to form line, column of companies, etc). I'm planning on using the d6, d8, d10 convention found in the rest of our games (<b><i>Beneath the Lily Banners</i></b>, <b><i>Donnybrook</i></b>, and <b><i>Mad for War</i></b>). Combat will probably based on groups of 4 models. Morale is going to be tied in part to the number of officers in a unit (similar to <b><i>The War Game</i></b>, though I haven't specifically worked out the details as I also want the d6, d8, d10 mechanic involved). The rest will wait until I get more units painted! <div><div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEhUAi4rz61YJ7D40vIeGvoaRiE4JrN9SgDMcAkQfmGH7Tler_MYrvkCRoykktnvhlR5-3P7YJMzsg85c4w0V_OsNRLsdPfOSpUnJdr52jkZqACZ6owOlQ6kaLelsFNnIzcmSkeGQLy6oA_b_KRyiLQ5XYI39kGzS0CcQIIsayTdS_Tvra_X7HFhswD9=s1344" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="939" data-original-width="1344" height="448" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEhUAi4rz61YJ7D40vIeGvoaRiE4JrN9SgDMcAkQfmGH7Tler_MYrvkCRoykktnvhlR5-3P7YJMzsg85c4w0V_OsNRLsdPfOSpUnJdr52jkZqACZ6owOlQ6kaLelsFNnIzcmSkeGQLy6oA_b_KRyiLQ5XYI39kGzS0CcQIIsayTdS_Tvra_X7HFhswD9=w640-h448" width="640" /></a></div><br /><div>I won't be tying these rules to any specific period of the horse and musket age, so there may be some anachronistic features of tactics or organization. The first actual wargame book I ever owned was <b><i>Charge!</i></b> by Peter Young and James Lawford. It was a chance purchase in 1986 at a bring 'n' buy stand at the first wargame show I ever attended in Raleigh, NC. I was fascinated by the photographs that portrayed massed units of infantry and cavalry. The Battle of Blasthof Heath provided a ready made scenario, complete with orders of battle. What intrigued me even more was a brief introduction:<p></p><p><i>The Emperor and Elector were at odds. As this situation was fairly normal it calls for no explanation. Some particularly outrageous act by the Elector had provoked the Emperor to exclaim, 'This insolent and pretentious prince must be chastised.' and to order the instant invasion of the Electorate.</i></p><p>I was well aware of fantasy wargaming at this point, but it was the first time I'd encountered what has become know as "imagi-nations" with historical miniatures. I later discovered Charles Grant's <b><i>The War Game</i></b> and an article in <b><i>Miniature Wargames</i></b> by Henry Hyde describing his own project, the War of Faltenian Succession. I REALLY wanted to do something similar. I filled a notebook with sketches, maps, unit organizations, personalities, and plans to muster grand armies.</p><p>But it never happened. In the dark days before the internet, it much harder to get historical miniatures than today. The only historical models I could find in any quantity were 15mm Napoleonics and that became my focus for a while. I found other rules (<b><i>Shako</i></b> and later <b><i>Piquet</i></b>) and based my collection for those. They were really more practical for the size tables I had access to anyway. My plans for big battalions were pushed into the background.</p><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEjBMtGuPeMEbZQsphfx5TPD3mxH8nRVRKKN55aOPg_MDycVkaXUN8nNU1TBYrrv_QKhLtYceo3s4wflWCRwh1sQ5EgVL4eP0MUHWxQOVNmT4UjgEEjirvD-c22MkQZLTy_IfTu-d4rFGqX7X5MRAm6OflidloMj3u_Hph-MXbUhSIBuGBOJWktOjslQ=s3061" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2367" data-original-width="3061" height="494" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEjBMtGuPeMEbZQsphfx5TPD3mxH8nRVRKKN55aOPg_MDycVkaXUN8nNU1TBYrrv_QKhLtYceo3s4wflWCRwh1sQ5EgVL4eP0MUHWxQOVNmT4UjgEEjirvD-c22MkQZLTy_IfTu-d4rFGqX7X5MRAm6OflidloMj3u_Hph-MXbUhSIBuGBOJWktOjslQ=w640-h494" width="640" /></a></div><br />Some time around 2015, I was flirting with the imagi-nation thing again. There had been a renaissance in the idea and there were dozens of blogs drawing inspiration from the same sources that laid the foundation for my journey into the hobby. I felt like the best path forward was to come up with a small map and go from there. While searching for ideas, I realized I had a map already. I've been running D&D games in my homebrew world, The Realm of Quindia, since the 80's. The geography and nations of my fantasy world would make a perfectly usable basis for my Horse & Musket project. I drew up the map above and sketched out a paragraph on each nation. It quickly became evident that I wanted my project to revolve around the Kingdom of Goland and Gran Duchy of Sazir. The Tower Hills are rich in silver and emerald mines and claimed by both nations. Goland is obviously much larger than Sazir, but recently out of a war with the Kingdom of Bronet, with whom it now retains an uncertain peace. To Goland's south lies the Skorhean Wastes which are home to savage nomadic horsemen. The Kingdom requires an inordinate number of its troops to protect its pastoral fields from these raiders. Finally, the Prelacy of Beelzia always seems ready to expand its territory and both Goland and Sazir keep a wary eye on them.<p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEgdfECvCcWd27KONSAYB5bFj_b5DMlNaylleg5HgIVo3SfAQAA2zAOuMcrXu6JDPNsFFkXM43bRT0zm2vOzLtvgyIHlFc5RO_OJvbaqlUAGMInpg1LVYaw8dEwDM8u6L7s7qLxSu-nGsstM3dNiUCAjQDlNOScyS9UhPheie4WbxGr1Vxj1O3KkBkyv=s3304" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2554" data-original-width="3304" height="494" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEgdfECvCcWd27KONSAYB5bFj_b5DMlNaylleg5HgIVo3SfAQAA2zAOuMcrXu6JDPNsFFkXM43bRT0zm2vOzLtvgyIHlFc5RO_OJvbaqlUAGMInpg1LVYaw8dEwDM8u6L7s7qLxSu-nGsstM3dNiUCAjQDlNOScyS9UhPheie4WbxGr1Vxj1O3KkBkyv=w640-h494" width="640" /></a></div><br /><p>With the greater stage set, I turned my eye toward detailing the armies. The army of the Kingdom of Goland currently stands near a similar number of units. I'll probably continue to add to these armies in the future...</p><p>Anyway, the point of all of this rambling had really just been background for my current project. That's right! Big battalions in 28mm! I have the models to build two "starter" armies at this scale. My initial goal for each side is two regiments of infantry (each 48 models plus officers), a company of light infantry (16 models plus officers), a regiment of cavalry (24 models plus officers), and a battery of artillery (2 guns, eight crew plus officers, limbers, and an ammo wagon).</p><p>Next time I'll dive deeper into the details and show off my first finished unit!</p>quindiahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14194306105013871853noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2937554593589042647.post-81369375097173588772021-12-20T14:27:00.004-05:002021-12-20T14:27:46.835-05:00Eppinger's Dragoons - Part Two<p>Finished! The pics could have been better as they were just snapped with my trusty iPhone sans my fancy photography lighting set up, but I'll try to get some better shots in the future.</p>quindiahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14194306105013871853noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2937554593589042647.post-72480159792524359172021-12-12T00:30:00.012-05:002021-12-19T18:31:23.021-05:00Eppinger's Dragoons - Part One<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-SaVElps8-Mg/YauybbMquTI/AAAAAAAAKb8/gNLBWdOLgnkeRF6XOeGRjV1ZE9LlorZWwCNcBGAsYHQ/s864/82433152-415E-41CF-8694-E26E71018E2D.jpeg" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="864" data-original-width="672" height="400" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-SaVElps8-Mg/YauybbMquTI/AAAAAAAAKb8/gNLBWdOLgnkeRF6XOeGRjV1ZE9LlorZWwCNcBGAsYHQ/w311-h400/82433152-415E-41CF-8694-E26E71018E2D.jpeg" width="311" /></a></div>
<p>I've been wanting to do this unit ever since I got into the period - somewhere around 2006. I actually purchased the models from Wargames Foundry, but other projects took precedence (we began working on <b><i>Republic to Empire</i></b>) and the models sat in a box (they're still there as far as I know).</p>
<p>In 2010, my real love for the period was solidified when Barry and I met at Historicon for the first time and put on the Battle of the Boyne as one of our games. No, Eppinger's Dragoons weren't present at the part of the battle we portrayed, but the game launched my desire to build armies for <i><b>Beneath the Lily Banners</b></i>. Our meeting also revealed the first fledgling steps (I got to see the samples of the first run of castings) of a new company - Warfare Miniatures.</p>
<p>My full investment in the period was delayed until Warfare Miniatures was up and running. Since I was starting out fresh, I wanted to use primarily the models we would be promoting. This meant I would be limited in my choices for a while. However, I needed tons of infantry and there were plenty of those in the first wave! I set out on the journey, content to wait for Eppinger's squadrons to become available in the future.</p><p>Now, there are only so many sculpts you can commission at once and ranges have a way of growing organically. One thing leads to another and soon you are buried under new models! The gaps in the range are always closing. It's only a matter of time before Warfare Miniatures has models for every practical troop type in the theater. </p>
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-IPnkYK9L5B0/YauywE5WNuI/AAAAAAAAKcE/YEY_Q5ybh1E3S7BD8JtImq34M8NahMKbQCNcBGAsYHQ/s639/ACC24A62-57C7-4A55-A9EB-DD3443F96886.jpeg" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="480" data-original-width="639" height="480" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-IPnkYK9L5B0/YauywE5WNuI/AAAAAAAAKcE/YEY_Q5ybh1E3S7BD8JtImq34M8NahMKbQCNcBGAsYHQ/w640-h480/ACC24A62-57C7-4A55-A9EB-DD3443F96886.jpeg" title="Barry Hilton’s regiment from waaaaay back (he’s old)!" width="640" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><i><span style="color: #cc0000;">Painted and photographed by Barry Hilton in the last century - the inspiration for my unit!</span></i></td></tr></tbody></table><p>But I've been waiting for these mounted, fur-capped gentlemen forever, despite my whining (Argh! Fur-capped Austrians? Why do we hate the French?). Warfare Miniatures does have a set of splendid Mounted French Dragoons in caps, so the other day I decided to stop being lazy and make my own. I'm not an accomplished sculptor, but have enough confidence in my skill to add a fur texture to the existing bases of the caps. Each became successively easier once I'd gotten the hang of it. All it took was adding a tiny sausage of putty (no, that's too much... nope still too much... even less than that) around the cap, shaping it with my only actual sculpting tool, and then working in the texture with an X-acto blade. In about an hour, I was able to tart up twelve troopers. Huzzah!</p>

<p>Only twelve? Well, yes... I'm mixing in a few models in hats. The officers likely wore hats and I've seen several other representations of this regiment (including Barry's) drop in a few among the rank and file. I think it adds the look of a hard as nails regiment on campaign.</p>

<p>I've used the "regular" Warfare Miniatures horses rather than the ones that come with the dragoon castings. My initial units of dragoons were assembled before we had the ponies. I didn't want my elite troopers looking into the navels of their counterparts on the other side! Here's a few WiP, ready for action!</p>

His forays outside of letters of marque were often due to the glacial rate that news travelled at the time ("What do you mean we made peace with Spain?"). Despite being placed under arrest by the crown in 1672 (a move to appease Spain after the sack of Panama), he was granted a Knight Bachelor by King Charles II and appointed as deputy governor of Jamaica in 1674.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-9iGOUWA_mvc/YLq4utopIII/AAAAAAAAKRU/88pI6LDShRgf55xbP3QsQ9gW1ShX53HGQCLcBGAsYHQ/s1057/Captain%2BHenry%2BMorgan%2B0196.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1057" data-original-width="864" height="640" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-9iGOUWA_mvc/YLq4utopIII/AAAAAAAAKRU/88pI6LDShRgf55xbP3QsQ9gW1ShX53HGQCLcBGAsYHQ/w524-h640/Captain%2BHenry%2BMorgan%2B0196.jpg" width="524" /></a></div>I love making these kinds of bases and it's a treat after painting so many rank and file. This group displays a minor conversion. The brilliant Wargames Foundry model of Henry Morgan was looking back over his shoulder in a "This way, dogs!" kinda pose. This is fine for single figures, but as the center piece of vignette it meant he would either be facing away from the front of the base or look more like he is encouraging a hasty retreat! I made quick work of this problem with a jeweler's saw - the only tricky part was preserving the goatee...<div><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-svOcABiTGok/YLq9Awuu1PI/AAAAAAAAKRs/FVtSTlsFeKYmOzdX0YZgcCqXgFPH2L98gCLcBGAsYHQ/s672/IMG_4727.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="672" data-original-width="504" height="200" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-svOcABiTGok/YLq9Awuu1PI/AAAAAAAAKRs/FVtSTlsFeKYmOzdX0YZgcCqXgFPH2L98gCLcBGAsYHQ/w150-h200/IMG_4727.jpg" width="150" /></a><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-D1x6ik6o5FY/YLq9A2exVhI/AAAAAAAAKRo/stW_DeO0tIAixTyfXumuusfuTkgft1SIgCLcBGAsYHQ/s672/IMG_4728.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="672" data-original-width="504" height="200" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-D1x6ik6o5FY/YLq9A2exVhI/AAAAAAAAKRo/stW_DeO0tIAixTyfXumuusfuTkgft1SIgCLcBGAsYHQ/w150-h200/IMG_4728.jpg" width="150" /></a><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-_k7ipT8nmVU/YLq9A3oUf5I/AAAAAAAAKRw/Dd7ofr2qa98AKN3jv-gqFWuxh-MGJXW7ACLcBGAsYHQ/s672/IMG_4729.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="672" data-original-width="504" height="200" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-_k7ipT8nmVU/YLq9A3oUf5I/AAAAAAAAKRw/Dd7ofr2qa98AKN3jv-gqFWuxh-MGJXW7ACLcBGAsYHQ/w150-h200/IMG_4729.jpg" width="150" /></a></div><div><div><br /></div><div>The stones on the base were actual slate chips (the kind they make for landscaping in lieu of mulch). One of the things that drew my attention to this theater was the variety of troops required. The Spanish forces are small and always supplemented with mulattos and native indians.</p><p>First up, I have several units of black militia. The training of these troops was suspect, at best. I've chosen to represent them in two ways. The first are (poorly) drilled troops equipped with firearms and led by European officers. This unit carries the flag of Varagua City, a town which sent troops to help defend Panama against Morgan's assault. These will count as All Musket in my games.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-OwS9-iQUVz0/YH3828VS36I/AAAAAAAAKO8/xgN9dwjOHZQ7_8bdo1pIZExnWpk3hOXVgCLcBGAsYHQ/s1344/Caribbean%2BMilitia%2B96dpi.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="883" data-original-width="1344" height="420" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-OwS9-iQUVz0/YH3828VS36I/AAAAAAAAKO8/xgN9dwjOHZQ7_8bdo1pIZExnWpk3hOXVgCLcBGAsYHQ/w640-h420/Caribbean%2BMilitia%2B96dpi.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><div><br /></div>The second type of black militia are poorly armed with bows, spears, and other close combat weapons. I'm using the rules for Highlanders from <b><i>The War of Three Kings</i></b> to represent these.<div><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-ERyLiWpKDKA/YH390VXrQmI/AAAAAAAAKPE/qNcg1KrmR64kUWMJThdSZlvOlDcHh8aFgCLcBGAsYHQ/s1344/Afro-Cuban%2BAuxiliary%2B0196.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="782" data-original-width="1344" height="372" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-ERyLiWpKDKA/YH390VXrQmI/AAAAAAAAKPE/qNcg1KrmR64kUWMJThdSZlvOlDcHh8aFgCLcBGAsYHQ/w640-h372/Afro-Cuban%2BAuxiliary%2B0196.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><br /><div><br /></div><div>Next up are the Central American natives (painted more like South American tribesmen, but they will work well enough for me), again treated as Highlanders.</div><div><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/--Dz4kCv9UsQ/YH3-T0sVEiI/AAAAAAAAKPM/V5mBfXdj8aEgNHxEbELG1peD8SIm11-jwCLcBGAsYHQ/s1344/Indian%2BAuxiliary%2B0196.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="697" data-original-width="1344" height="332" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/--Dz4kCv9UsQ/YH3-T0sVEiI/AAAAAAAAKPM/V5mBfXdj8aEgNHxEbELG1peD8SIm11-jwCLcBGAsYHQ/w640-h332/Indian%2BAuxiliary%2B0196.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><br /><div>Finally, a unit I don't specifically need for my current scenario, but they fit in with the rest. These are Ruga Ruga from the Wargames Foundry 19th century range, but I intend to field them as African pirates, escaped (or freed) slaves, or simply brigands. I was careful to avoid models with Remington rifles, cartridge belts, and the like. I still to paint a second unit of Central American natives, a handful officers (for the BLB scenarios) and characters (for Donnybrook).<br /><p>Just in case I haven't mentioned this, I'm planning on publishing this project as a 4Play pack with three linked games so you can replay this short campaign! It's not in my nature to be idle so I decided to wade into the future (of the BLB period, that is) and produce a few new flag sheets...<p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjRTebv_400A_deeAq81pszBbpv58q8el6vZeUB8rhExQPhPE-labVx8QOWD4O7zIFd85Hpu2UIX3eNeJ7VACShUL1wv3pDdBkbnt982setKvru8VcTSUg-GSuPISzxK4Hw0lSOzH8heyg/s872/Waterloo+Flag+Set+%2528French%2529.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="872" data-original-width="683" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjRTebv_400A_deeAq81pszBbpv58q8el6vZeUB8rhExQPhPE-labVx8QOWD4O7zIFd85Hpu2UIX3eNeJ7VACShUL1wv3pDdBkbnt982setKvru8VcTSUg-GSuPISzxK4Hw0lSOzH8heyg/w502-h640/Waterloo+Flag+Set+%2528French%2529.jpg" width="502" /></a></div><br /><p>Well, ok... my OCD kicked in and I ended up with over 120 units - the entire French army for Waterloo (suitable, of course for any part of the 100 days campaign)! They are divided into divisions, which is how I normally set out collecting an army. Regiments were only issued one eagle in 1815 and this was carried by the first battalion. Opinions seem divide as to whether or not the infantry flags had fringe, but I decided to include it. If you fall into the camp of "without", it is easy enough to trim them off when you cut out the flag!</p><p></p>These will be available at <a href="https://www.warfareminiaturesusa.com/collections/flags/1815">Warfare Miniatures USA</a> (in the US and Canada) and the <a href="https://www.leagueofaugsburg.com/shop/products-cat-19.html">League of Augsburg</a> store (for the rest of the planet), though it may be a couple of days before they are posted...<div><br /></div><div>Right! I'll have more flags for 1815 later this year. There were no permanent Spanish tercios at the time and no official regulations of colonial troops. Units appear to have raised and equipped by various local governors. Theoretically, such troops could be painted in any manner desired.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-lx4xLLvtzMY/YDKyZ9lX09I/AAAAAAAAKLU/FSSE2CoP9lEiMHAZuPmjbPQm4jDA4n0HwCLcBGAsYHQ/s1152/Spanish%2BInfantry%2B0296.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="874" data-original-width="1152" height="486" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-lx4xLLvtzMY/YDKyZ9lX09I/AAAAAAAAKLU/FSSE2CoP9lEiMHAZuPmjbPQm4jDA4n0HwCLcBGAsYHQ/w640-h486/Spanish%2BInfantry%2B0296.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><div><br /></div>I've chosen to stick with fairly common color choices for my first units. I've distinguished between professional troops and uniformed militia by using proper Spanish coats (with turnbacks that match the cuff colors) for the former. I've used models with "generic" period coats for the latter. There are a couple of Swiss models tucked in the back of the militia units to add a little more variety to the units.<div><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-XgakRn2I0Cg/YGutFwCXnJI/AAAAAAAAKNY/GCxHr0h_e_YWOiMoaEYYW1wXVGGNPipoACLcBGAsYHQ/s1344/Spanish%2BMilitia%2B03%2B96dpi.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1011" data-original-width="1344" height="482" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-XgakRn2I0Cg/YGutFwCXnJI/AAAAAAAAKNY/GCxHr0h_e_YWOiMoaEYYW1wXVGGNPipoACLcBGAsYHQ/w640-h482/Spanish%2BMilitia%2B03%2B96dpi.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div>These units will be for <b><i>Beneath the Lily Banners</i></b> at something in the range of 1 model per 15 men, so two stands represents a company. I'm planning on adding three more companies of militia with muskets, plus a single company of pike for both the regulars and militia. Pikes were likely not used in the New World during this period, but accounts often refer to foot troops armed with "lances" which I'm interpreting to be pikes... so there!</div><div><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-9eTvzSfTJHk/YGuuB6YLstI/AAAAAAAAKNg/OEelhhAQId8n1htrIoyzopgW5rEvtp06ACLcBGAsYHQ/s960/Spanish%2BArtillery%2B01.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="623" data-original-width="960" height="416" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-9eTvzSfTJHk/YGuuB6YLstI/AAAAAAAAKNg/OEelhhAQId8n1htrIoyzopgW5rEvtp06ACLcBGAsYHQ/w640-h416/Spanish%2BArtillery%2B01.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><br /><div><br /></div><div>I have a few artillery pieces for additional firepower. I've decided to use naval guns as these were most common in the coastal forts and occasionally lug around on land as well.</div><div><br /></div><div>Finally, I needed some cavalry. There are very few mentions of horse during this period, but seem to have been 400 cavalry at the Battle of Panama in 1671. At my chosen man to model ratio, I needed four squadrons of 6 models. I've decided to draft stands from my old ECW armies. The Spanish cavalry of Panama were described has having "buff coats" in one source. Some of the headgear will be a little anachronistic, but Caribbean fashion seems to have lagged a bit behind. Two of my squadrons will carry Spanish flags and should look the part for my needs anyway.</div><div><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-rtlOhZU98fo/YGuuhVCgVZI/AAAAAAAAKNo/GA4qgjUuYlwiEhYEDDyLfXztvYRN8G-KwCLcBGAsYHQ/s1152/Spanish%2BHorse%2B01.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="738" data-original-width="1152" height="410" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-rtlOhZU98fo/YGuuhVCgVZI/AAAAAAAAKNo/GA4qgjUuYlwiEhYEDDyLfXztvYRN8G-KwCLcBGAsYHQ/w640-h410/Spanish%2BHorse%2B01.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><div><br /></div>Next time, we'll look at one of my favorite parts of this project... native auxiliaries!<br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div>quindiahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14194306105013871853noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2937554593589042647.post-35481945162632829402021-02-19T09:12:00.001-05:002021-02-19T09:12:47.642-05:00Buccaneers, Pirates, and Privateers<p>One of the things I knew I would need when I decided to jump into the Caribbean theater were pirates... lots and lots of pirates!</p><p></p>These models can be used as privateers and general ship crew for every nation in the West Indies throughout the 17th and 18th centuries. There will be a few anachronisms of dress across this broad range - tricorns in 1635 and ECW era trousers in 1750 - but the general appearance will serve, at least for me.<p></p><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-1j0euJzGaQE/YC_DQv8bwGI/AAAAAAAAKKI/fqM4ilayMWop3ZssCMygrkqAmsl-Gh5kwCLcBGAsYHQ/s1344/Buccaneers%2B0396.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="760" data-original-width="1344" height="362" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-1j0euJzGaQE/YC_DQv8bwGI/AAAAAAAAKKI/fqM4ilayMWop3ZssCMygrkqAmsl-Gh5kwCLcBGAsYHQ/w640-h362/Buccaneers%2B0396.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><br />Right away, I knew I wanted to be able to use the collection for <b><i>Donnybrook</i></b> and <i style="font-weight: bold;">Beneath the Lily Banners - The War of Three Kings</i> and that meant finding a basing method that would work for either game. One option would be sabot bases, to group six singly mounted bases, but I've never likes the look of those. My foot dragoons for BLB have been simply left as skirmishers and I crowd them together to represent a standard formation.<p></p><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Wzmg9fmlERw/YC_DXlcUfQI/AAAAAAAAKKM/Jvtvj3k9aQYROaYnX9_SeN05z0BklbzpACLcBGAsYHQ/s1344/Buccaneers%2B0296.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="721" data-original-width="1344" height="344" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Wzmg9fmlERw/YC_DXlcUfQI/AAAAAAAAKKM/Jvtvj3k9aQYROaYnX9_SeN05z0BklbzpACLcBGAsYHQ/w640-h344/Buccaneers%2B0296.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><br />In <b><i>A Taste of Victory</i></b>, Barry classifies ship crews as 'Tribal Infantry' and suggests using the rules for Highlanders from BLB:W3K to represent them. To me, that suggested not only different fighting abilities, but a different look on the table top.<p></p><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-pbpbQrL5oP4/YC_DeQFjaNI/AAAAAAAAKKQ/e5W8RVMu8ek_IhCs2eUkyCRwfOF1lePhwCLcBGAsYHQ/s1344/Buccaneers%2B0496.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="726" data-original-width="1344" height="346" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-pbpbQrL5oP4/YC_DeQFjaNI/AAAAAAAAKKQ/e5W8RVMu8ek_IhCs2eUkyCRwfOF1lePhwCLcBGAsYHQ/w640-h346/Buccaneers%2B0496.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><br />I decided to go with a multiple basing system, inspired by <a href="https://dalauppror.blogspot.com/2015/11/123-basing.html">Dalauppror</a> years ago, that I've used for several other projects. This system combines the ease of movement and look of small vignettes with the flexibility of singly based models. They will also fit on my ships when it's time for <b><i>Donnybrook at Sea</i></b>! These bases can be clustered tightly together (they are spread out a bit for the photographs to try and show off the individual models) and only end up slightly wider than my regimental troops, which would not be unexpected for rabble!<p></p><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/--yOZ3m0m5Xs/YC_E86QbnDI/AAAAAAAAKKk/Zi5sAyI8KdE3QIsibWUpHLDv6R0XLPAuwCLcBGAsYHQ/s1152/Buccaneers%2B0196.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="672" data-original-width="1152" height="374" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/--yOZ3m0m5Xs/YC_E86QbnDI/AAAAAAAAKKk/Zi5sAyI8KdE3QIsibWUpHLDv6R0XLPAuwCLcBGAsYHQ/w640-h374/Buccaneers%2B0196.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><br />I'll be adding more of these fellows in the future (I have at least another two units of 12 and there are characters on the way), but this is what I need for my current goal. These were fun to paint, but also took me longer than usual - the variety being both a blessing and a curse in these regards. With so many other models in the queue, I'm moving on to other things for the collection, but I'm really hoping to focus on this theater for some time.<div><br /></div><div>I was torn on the basing for these... they will look a little strange on the deck of a ship. Mounting them on wooden planks would have required removing the integral base and they would have looked equally as strange on land.<br /><p></p><p>We'll see how that goes... more soon!</p><p><br /></p></div>quindiahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14194306105013871853noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2937554593589042647.post-25010802142939915532021-02-14T19:37:00.008-05:002021-02-15T15:24:26.996-05:00Adventures in the Caribbean<div>Hi, folks! One of the theaters that opened up in this imagi-nation conflict was Jamaica. The eclectic collection of <a href="http://leagueofaugsburg.blogspot.com/2017/07/battle-for-britain-inside-caribbean.html?q=caribbean">models and units</a> gathered for this Caribbean campaign was amazing and the kind of forces that the wargamer and painter in me loves. It went onto my "to do" list, but other projects pushed it to back of the shelf and it faded to a dim memory.</div><div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiCODb1t3YVNwAZYSqmWaDYKfxqQXPxf52_9yUDYXC12o_ajVTQO4yYzCss-O6cfWVJL67kPnJ9izM9ZFxyz6jtFJoS_-vkSU6MDMxG0cy8xHmezJ-v9kGEnAlMENBoz1ZB__Eqj53yCYo/s2048/Quindia+Studios+Fleet+01.JPEG" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1536" data-original-width="2048" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiCODb1t3YVNwAZYSqmWaDYKfxqQXPxf52_9yUDYXC12o_ajVTQO4yYzCss-O6cfWVJL67kPnJ9izM9ZFxyz6jtFJoS_-vkSU6MDMxG0cy8xHmezJ-v9kGEnAlMENBoz1ZB__Eqj53yCYo/w640-h480/Quindia+Studios+Fleet+01.JPEG" width="640" /></a></div><br /><div>Fast forward to 2020 and <b><i><a href="https://www.warfareminiaturesusa.com/collections/books-in-pdf-format/products/donnybrook-at-sea">Donnybrook at Sea</a></i></b>. This project sprouted from <b><i>Mad for War</i></b>, a book Barry and I were already working on. We compiled the supplement for <b><i>Donnybrook</i></b> in a matter of weeks not months, but somehow I wound up with half a dozen 28mm ship models. I started buying models to crew said ships, initially with an eye to fighting fictional battles as part of my 1690 Ireland project. </div><div><br /></div><div>I am complete novice to naval gaming and in order to get into the spirit while we were working on both projects, I began a spending spree on Amazon, buying both general and a few specific titles. I stumbled on the exploits of Henry Morgan and was struck by how well his battles would translate onto the table... ironically NOT involving all of these shiny new boats I was amassing.</div></div><div><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgHEMTge74GTNOMIK1LZzAXpxEAaGdXh4Zs_AvnbNA73wm_ef3yaUHJY2As0mcv_ppR0XkyYYi9Xr6d5a7t5oiOB9tRkfurMOVf7bYKeJ05meOsNWRQIQR2gCVU1dj9eFzUCe6YkDjz7C8/s2048/IMG_9685.JPG" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1365" data-original-width="2048" height="426" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgHEMTge74GTNOMIK1LZzAXpxEAaGdXh4Zs_AvnbNA73wm_ef3yaUHJY2As0mcv_ppR0XkyYYi9Xr6d5a7t5oiOB9tRkfurMOVf7bYKeJ05meOsNWRQIQR2gCVU1dj9eFzUCe6YkDjz7C8/w640-h426/IMG_9685.JPG" width="640" /></a></div><br /><div>Then <b><i>A Taste of Victory</i></b> (a book I had nothing to do with) landed at my door. Tucked away among the other scenarios was <i>Sugar War!</i>, set in Martinique and using some of the same units that had appeared in the Jamaica games. I'd already been thinking about the sorts of units I would need for Morgan's campaigns and this was the clincher. </div><div><br /></div><div>I'll be collecting and painting forces to represent most of the different factions that fought for control of the West Indies in the last half of the 17th century. One of the great things about this collection is that many of the units are universal. Sailors and buccaneers of the region look pretty much the same, regardless of nation. Locally raised militia are similar. Uniformed units were usually poorly supplied and ragged. Using <i>Sugar War!</i> and the other inspiration mentioned above, I've laid out a cunning plan to get the most out of this collection and be able to fight battles across the entire theater.</div><div><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjkTrV0FJDj2T26UHK_JeBslsS-Kk7B9mUq21AmLKrMDBewMaZlVNpxkIDKGptMnfKftCR19MEY82JBDPgCTzOh6p3dc1QUeHqceOCutDRX-Ox6tHKMX1P-FVesTHcpB09w9fsTGx10GFo/s1344/Afro-Cuban+Auxiliary+0196.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="782" data-original-width="1344" height="372" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjkTrV0FJDj2T26UHK_JeBslsS-Kk7B9mUq21AmLKrMDBewMaZlVNpxkIDKGptMnfKftCR19MEY82JBDPgCTzOh6p3dc1QUeHqceOCutDRX-Ox6tHKMX1P-FVesTHcpB09w9fsTGx10GFo/w640-h372/Afro-Cuban+Auxiliary+0196.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><br /><div>I'll be building units for <b><i>Beneath the Lily Banners</i></b> (with companies as the standard unit rather than battalions) and <b><i>Donnybrook</i></b>. He has made a short introductory video to <i style="font-weight: bold;">Mad for War </i>which I have uploaded to YouTube on a League of Augsburg channel. My hope is that both Barry and I will use this channel to support <b><i>Donnybrook</i></b>, <b><i>Beneath the Lily Banners</i></b>, <b><i>Republic to Empire</i></b>, <b><i>Victory Without Quarter </i></b>and <b><i>Mad for War</i></b>. </p><p>We have a few instructional videos to upload over the next few days. These provide a walk through the core mechanics of the rules for <b><i>Mad for War</i></b> and a couple of short example games.</p><p>It would be great if you would subscribe to the channel and support our continuing crusade to bring 17th century gaming to the wider wargaming community. She and I are both fans of H. P. Lovecraft. I saw something like this offered commercially, though it was only 3.5” tall and didn’t come with a box. The photograph for the item DID display it, packed in moss and nestled in a beat up crate and that pic is what inspired me.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-0gy2tCTrVdk/X-NRfvosE0I/AAAAAAAAJ_w/1ghr0JaJWg0xznEglocO9-KbA79capLWwCLcBGAsYHQ/s2048/5B84ED4F-E70E-4B9D-83D9-5CDEB40B3736.jpeg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1536" data-original-width="2048" height="300" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-0gy2tCTrVdk/X-NRfvosE0I/AAAAAAAAJ_w/1ghr0JaJWg0xznEglocO9-KbA79capLWwCLcBGAsYHQ/w400-h300/5B84ED4F-E70E-4B9D-83D9-5CDEB40B3736.jpeg" width="400" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">The idol is of great Cthulhu, variations of which are mentioned in The Call of Cthulhu.
